Biking
The Gunnison/Crested Butte area is so renowned for biking that the USA Pro Cycling Challenge– the new, U.S. equivalent of the Tour de France, nicknamed the Tour de Colorado– came here in its first year and all but one year since.
There are dozens of wonderful mountain-bike trails crissrossing the region and you can try out your skills on a wide variety of terrain, from Hartman Rocks south of town, reminiscent of Utah, to the wildflower meadows and Alp-like views north of Crested Butte. Of course, many people prefer road-biking and you will find road-bike trails around the town of Gunnison as well as many quiet country roads and paths for you to cycle along. Ranch roads are usually empty. They are unpaved but well maintained. Bikers can also use the ranch trails.
